Music/Liturgy Coordinator – Job Description
Purpose and Scope
Under the direction of the Pastor, this person of faith and commitment to the Roman Catholic Church and its teachings is responsible for the effective planning, coordination, and execution of music within the liturgical celebrations of the parish.
Essential Job Functions
In collaboration with liturgy staff and the Pastor, develops goals and objectives for the Parish liturgy and music programs.
Plans and conducts all liturgical music rehearsals (consists of weekly practices plus additional practices for all holy days, includes adult and children choirs).
· Develops the Parish cantor/choir program.
· Assists in preparation of music selections for couples preparing for marriage in the Parish.
· Provides musical accompaniment &/or assists Parish in securing coverage for
Sunday Parish liturgies and some weddings and funerals.
· Creates and maintains a resource list for coverage at all liturgies, weddings and funerals.
· Plans seasonal music and preparation of musicians and choir for Masses (weekends) and other special Masses held throughout the year (e.g., Ash Wednesday, All Souls Mass, Thanksgiving)
· Researches, organizes, maintains and expands music resources of the music office.
· Provides input into the management of the Parish music budget.
· Attends & participates in staff meetings when scheduled.
· Attends & participates in liturgical meetings.
· Recruit and train volunteers to participate in the music ministry.
· Ensure all copies of music used at the parish are legal, authorized copies.
· Collaborate with other ad hoc groups as necessary to plan parish liturgical events (e.g. conferences, missions, retreats, etc.).
· Remain up to date with Liturgy documents, especially ongoing Liturgical changes.
· Manage/accomplish projects assigned by the Pastor.
· Collaborate with parish staff for parish functions.
· Other tasks as appropriate to assist parish staff and/or parishioners.
Additional Job Functions
· Coordinates all volunteer musicians and ensures quality of musical performance during masses at which these people minister. Preference should be for someone other than the Director to cantor.
· Recruits, coordinates and oversees the rehearsal and scheduling of choral music ministries, choirs, cantors, and accompanists (e.g., Sunday, Vigil, and Children’s Choirs).
· Is present at parish events and demonstrates interest and concern for the tastes and faith expressions of parishioners.
· Serves as a resource on musical and liturgical matters for the Parish.
· Adheres to all Diocesan and Parish policies for purchase/payment approval requests for all music ministry needs including music, equipment, stipends, payroll, etc.
· Administers and coordinates the operation, maintenance and repair of the musical instruments and equipment as needed.
· Participates in appropriate diocesan meetings, programs and activities.
· Probation period is 90 days at which time a review will be held with the Pastor and other staff or Council members, as appropriate, to establish permanent status.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
· Practicing Catholic with in-depth knowledge and training in theology, liturgy in the Roman Catholic tradition and liturgical music.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others.
· Ability to empower people to sing and engage the Parish in the musical celebration of faith at worship.
· Proficiency in piano, keyboard, and/or guitar, organ and vocal skills.
· Knowledge of keyboard technique, service playing requirements, transposition, instrument techniques, group vocal techniques for adults and children and choral conducting.
· Some understanding of acoustics especially as they pertain to Parish worship spaces.
Minimum Qualifications
· Active practicing Catholic in Communion with the Church
· Degree in Music and/or 5 years previous Parish experience.
· Proficiency in organ, piano, accompaniment and vocal/choral conducting
· Experience with musical instrumentation, hand bells and music arrangement, preferable with music writing and composition.
· Familiarity with music technology; including sound systems, digital scores, virtual instruments, recording, sequencing and interfacing.
· Broad musical knowledge of styles including chant, standard modern Catholic music, traditional hymns, and Praise and Worship style of music.
· Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Publisher, Music writing/editing software)
