Description
The Interpreter, Japanese Communications role supports the critical task of enabling effective communications between stakeholders from North America and Japan (and Toyota stakeholders from other countries). This individual will leverage their strong experience and skillset in the field of professional interpretation to work on multiple concurrent priorities, working closely with stakeholders from North America and Japan in a business environment. This includes, but is not limited to in-person and virtual meetings, as well as written exchanges on mediums such as email, MS Teams messages, etc.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrable history and passion to navigate through communication challenges across geographies and English & Japanese language barriers, in order to achieve business objectives and goals. This candidate should also have a proven track record of professional interaction with senior stakeholders, enabling them to participate in highly critical (and at times confidential) business discussions. The candidate should be able to manage different personalities and other challenges that arise from communication gaps and help add clarity to achieve alignment.
Essential Functions:
Interpret (consecutive mode) and facilitate online and in-person meetings with members from North America and Japan.
Translate general correspondence between North America and Japan (emails, Teams chats, etc.), including translating day-to-day correspondence and sharing with TMNA stakeholders in a timely manner.
Manage logistics and escort visitors from Japan.
Manage initiatives, projects and events including planning, ownership of actions, timeline and budget.
Build individual and team relationships between North American and Japanese entities.
Provide guidance to North American colleagues on how to work with Japan (e.g., checking PPT presentations in advance to ensure that the information is presented in a way that is easy for Japan to understand).
Collect information from TMNA staff/groups and try to understand what their challenges are in achieving objectives with Japan colleagues. Assist in navigating these challenges by understanding and analyzing the context from the Japan perspective as well and provide possible solutions to bridge gaps leveraging their comprehension of both languages.
Track tasks and create meeting memos to ensure alignment between all parties.
Requirements
Native or high business-level Japanese (reading/writing/speaking/listening).
Native or high business-level English (reading/writing/speaking/listening).
Minimum 5 years of professional consecutive interpretation experience.
Minimum 5 years of experience using Japanese language in a business setting.
Ability to use formal Japanese in both written and spoken communications.
Ability to write business emails in Japanese and English.
Experience working for a Japanese organization/company.
Cultural diplomacy skills ability to help the Japan side understand the North American side, and vice-versa.
Sight translation experience.
Intermediate or higher proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PPT, Outlook).
Familiarity with automotive industry.
Familiarity with general IT and possibly even Cybersecurity concepts.
Ability to work in a high-paced environment and manage multiple priorities concurrently, rapidly assessing and prioritizing assignments to deliver based on business needs and stakeholder requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
