About the role The Mail Systems Engineer (Postfix / Dovecot / Amavis) – SwishEmail is responsible for designing, operating, and maintaining SwishEmail’s mail infrastructure and delivery systems. Reporting to the Head of SwishEmail and working closely with Infrastructure, Security, and Support teams, this role ensures reliable email delivery, strong security controls, and high service availability in a global, remote-first environment. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on production mail systems and deliverability. Key Responsibilities Mail Infrastructure Engineering & Operations Design, deploy, and maintain mail systems using Postfix, Dovecot, and Amavis Ensure high availability, scalability, and performance of email services Manage mail queues, routing, and delivery workflows Deliverability & Reputation Management Monitor and optimise email deliverability and sender reputation Manage SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and related email authentication mechanisms Troubleshoot delivery issues and blacklisting events Security & Abuse Prevention Implement and maintain spam, malware, and phishing protections Support abuse handling and enforcement of acceptable use policies Work with Security teams on incident response related to email abuse Monitoring, Incident Response & Recovery Implement monitoring and alerting for mail systems Participate in incident response and root-cause analysis Support backup, recovery, and disaster response procedures Documentation & Continuous Improvement Maintain clear documentation and operational runbooks Improve automation, reliability, and operational tooling Support platform improvements and upgrades Expectations Maintain stable, secure, and high-performing mail systems Apply operational discipline and best practices Communicate clearly with technical and support teams Operate effectively in a fully remote environment

Requirements

Experience Proven experience operating Postfix, Dovecot, and Amavis in production Experience managing large-scale or multi-tenant email platforms Experience working in remote or distributed teams preferred Experience in hosting or SaaS email environments is an advantage Skills Strong Linux system administration skills Deep understanding of email protocols (SMTP, IMAP, POP3) Experience with email authentication and deliverability tooling Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills Clear written and verbal communication abilities Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience) Email, Linux, or infrastructure certifications preferred but not required
