The School Nurse plays a critical role in promoting the health and wellness of students and fostering a safe, inclusive school environment. As a key member of the Student Support Team, the nurse delivers direct healthcare services, assesses and addresses medical needs, administers medications, and collaborates closely with families, school personnel, and external healthcare providers. The ideal candidate is a compassionate, student-centered professional who advances well-being through proactive health education and responsive care for students from Toddler through Grade 12.
Core Responsibilities
Provide direct medical care, including first aid and emergency response, to students and employees during the school day.
Administer routine and emergency medications in accordance with territorial regulations and school policies.
Maintain physician-signed parental consent forms for administering prescription medications.
Accurately document student health records, including emergency forms, immunization records, allergy/disability data, treatment logs, and incident reports, in compliance with legal and confidentiality standards.
Ensure compliance with federal, territorial, and school health regulations, including Department of Health (DoH) and CDC guidelines, and maintain readiness for health record audits.
Educate students, staff, and families on health topics, such as disease prevention, hygiene, and healthy habits.
Report communicable diseases to public health authorities as required.
Develop emergency response protocols and lead staff training in CPR, AED, First Aid, OSHA compliance, and EpiPen use.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized Health Office; dispose of biomedical waste per health regulations.
Manage medical supply inventory and restock first aid kits for classrooms and field trips.
Coordinate with the Admissions Office to ensure all required student health documentation is complete prior to enrollment.
Collaborate with counselors, administrators, and faculty when health issues affect student learning or behavior.
Monitor and maintain on-campus AED units.
Prepare injury reports and support families with school-related insurance claims.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
Qualifications & Skills
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution required.
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license (must be renewed every two years).
Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (renewed every two years).
Membership in the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) required.
Preferred: Experience in pediatric, school, or emergency response nursing.
Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to work independently in high-stress situations.
Warm, approachable demeanor with strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
Meticulous organizational and record-keeping skills.
Working Conditions
Ability to walk, stand, or kneel for extended periods.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to carry, push, pull, or lift equipment necessary for care.
School setting with exposure to childhood illnesses, communicable diseases and bloodborne pathogens.
Requires working with students of various ages and developmental stages.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
